No apologies for another post about Fish & Chips, indeed, when has there ever been any apologies from DH for posting about Fish & Chips? In this instance, however, my reasons were born not just of greed and desire for deep-fried goodness but because I had been given the task of introducing my young friend, Lex to the wonderful world of Britain’s favourite food. Those of you who have been reading along for a while will recognise Lex as the irrepressible student I encountered on my trip to Kuala Lumpur.

Now, she is in London and as well as putting her in touch with someone to give her a job and a roof over her head, she demanded I take her for her first fried fish experience. The Laughing Halibut in Strutton Ground, Victoria has been on the radar for a while, and when we bundled in at Midday from the sheeting rain outside, the place was just getting ready for business.Being informed that our order of cod & chips, haddock & chips and mushy peas would take at least ten minutes to prepare was a good sign of fresh cooking and I took the opportunity to drag Lex up to the fryer to see the fillets being battered and dipped into the hot oil.The end result was not bad at all.

The chips were fresh and crunchy and I instructed Lex in the fine art of vinegar dousing.

It was crisp, but the mix was too thick so it had not bubbled to an airy crunch and had a soft under layer. It didn’t seem to put Lex off and she declared her first experience of fish & chips to be a positive thing, including her introduction to pickled onions and eggs.

In DH terms, that’s not faint praise and not a bad way for Lex to begin her own noble quest for the perfect Fish & Chips.

But like pearls in oysters, a good chippy does appear once in a while — one where the fish is always fresh, the batter crunchy and the chips fluffy.

Here’s our pick of those pearls, all of which offer decent dining-in options as well as takeaway... The Bonnie Gull Seafood Shack in Fitzrovia has fish and chips on the menu — beer battered North Sea haddock and beef dripping chunky chips, to be exact.

Its fish is among the flakiest, well-seasoned and highly-flavoured we’ve tried, its batter is reliably crisp and chewy, and the chips are soft and fluffy.

Fat crisp chips (possibly the best on this list), pleasantly chewy batter and proper mushy peas all go in its favour, while the freshness of the fish being served is unquestionable.

There’s nothing particularly fancy about it, just the highly sought-after holy trinity of crunchy and grease-free batter, fresh and juicy fish, and crisp and fluffy chips.

This is not because I am so desperate to go back and eat fish and chips at the Laughing Halibut; it is because beginning to describe why we ate there at all took me back to everything we loved about our three months in London this spring.

This was great in almost every way: a 15 walk to St James’ Park—where we went with the boys every other day; a 15 minute walk to Tate Britain (though we didn’t go as often as we should have); pretty much in the shadow of Westminster Abbey (though we only went a few days before we left); a 10 minute walk from the St. James’ Park and Westminster tube stations, a 20 minute walk from Victoria station; within easy reach of pretty much everywhere in central London.

I’d also advise against the rookie mistake I made when ordering our first takeaway meal: I got chips with every order of fish and it turned out that one order of chips was probably enough for our family of four.I will also advise against their scampi—the batter to tiny shrimp ratio is approximately 500:1 (though this was also true at the truck outside Fiddler’s in Drumnadrochit).

The restaurant itself is spacious enough—it’s located at one end of Strutton Ground, which is filled with food trucks during the lunch hour on weekdays—and service is friendly but we mostly got fish and chips to go.

I would not tell you to go out of your way to eat at the Laughing Halibut—or indeed at any other place that slings fish and chips.

More recently, in my blog How to read P G Wodehouse: a new prescription, I savoured the fruits of recent roaming of the Plum pastures; and cited juicy quotations from the outstanding Ring for Jeeves.

The cover of the Folio edition of ‘Thank You, Jeeves’ Thank You, Jeeves strikes me as one of the funniest of the Jeeves tales (quite an accolade – Ed).

Jeeves himself has oiled off elsewhere for much of the action, but in his absence, Bertie Wooster’s ability to get into scrapes is exploited to outstanding effect.

Such scenes as a night in which Bertie repeatedly fails to find a place to rest his head are (more…)

This Westminster fish and chip shop is David Miliband's favourite chippie, apparently.

Whether this place wants to be associated with political luminaries such as he is as debatable as the original claim, but what we can be sure of is the ethos of this place - traditional fish and chips all the way.

Either way, visitors can get stuck into deep-fried haddock, cod and plaice alongside chunky chips, a few pies, battered sausages and other fish and chip shop staples.
